The Copa Mahou changes format and will be held in Maspalomas on 21st July

The first derby match of the season, the Copa Mahou, is to be held for the first time in a single encounter, as opposed to the 2-leg format which it had followed since its inception back in 2011. The sixth year of the tournament will feature the Estadio M

Mahou, responding to the request of both clubs and their sets of fans, has decided to focus the attention of the Cup in a single match, while at the same time promoting its sporting value. Rafael González-Coviella, brand manager at Mahou en Canarias, explains that "this derby is eagerly awaited by most fans on the islands and had to feature in pre-season for the 2018/19 season. We have studied consumer perceptions and the results confirm they wish to enjoy a summer local derby".

Meanwhile, the fact the game is to be held in Maspalomas, at the heart of the tourist hotspot, according to González-Coviella, "will mean large numbers of fans turning up and a great atmosphere in the ground for these two top teams". And he added "The intention of both the clubs and Mahou is that it should be done in an environment of sporting fair play, brotherhood and healthy competition which we promote here at Mahou".
