Sharing points and a happy ending to another season in La Liga (1-1)
Xavi García Pimienta's team closed the championship with a draw that ultimately placed them 7 points clear of the relegation zone.
The 1-1 draw against Alavés, in front of 23,043 spectators enjoying a festive atmosphere, was a fair result for both teams. The visiting side took the lead first with a goal from Carlos Vicente, and towards the end of the season, Marc Cardona equalized with a precise shot.
The farewell to the season also meant goodbye to members of the current project of the yellow club. With the coach García Pimienta's decision known, the audience focused their attention on him before the match, applauding and chanting his name intensely for a minute as a sign of gratitude for the achievements that bear his signature over two and a half seasons. The coach received from the vice president, Nicolás Ortega, a commemorative shirt for his time at the club with the number of official matches (105).
The first dangerous situation of the afternoon was thwarted by Álvaro Valles, as he timely saved a header from Carlos Vicente. The goalkeeper from La Rinconada pushed the ball out for a corner, although it had previously touched the crossbar.
The match was full of action and chances on both sides of the field. Álvaro Valles saved a penalty from Giuliano Simeone in the 31st minute. The foul in the box had been committed by Mika on the same attacking player. Sandro responded in the 33rd minute with a hard shot that Owono, the goalkeeper, deflected. Again, Valles stretched in the air to repel a close-range shot from Sola in the 39th minute. And Sandro, once more, shot over the crossbar from inside the area in the 40th minute.
But the score remained unchanged in an animated first half, where each team played their cards in an attempt to improve their final positions in the standings.
The 0-1 came from a long ball, scored by Carlos Vicente. There was a prior deflection that the home defense failed to clear. And the Maño attacker eventually shot the loose ball in the area after an improvised pass from his teammate Simeone. Alex Suárez managed to touch the ball, but he couldn't keep it out of the Grada Curva goal.
Las Palmas poured forward in the second half to level the game. Their attempts lacked precision until the 70th minute when, after a measured cross from the left by Benito Ramírez, Marc Cardona hooked a good shot at the first touch.
In the final stretch of the match, there were again chances, but goalkeepers Valles and Owono did not see their domains breached again.
The fans waited until after the match to thank their players for the effort and audacity of a memorable campaign that had a happy ending.
