The game started off in an intrepid style from both teams. With the season all but over in terms of points up for grabs, and the players free from any competitive tension, the game was end to end. Girona went ahead in the fifth minute with a strike by Stuani. The Catalán striker headed in a great cross from the right from Portu. Jonathan Calleri, who was tugged back in the box by Pere Pons, stepped up to hit home from the penalty (min. 14) for Las Palmas.
Girona were constantly looking to stretch the home defence on the counter attack. Jémez’s side created danger down the wings, with crosses by former youth team player Benito and Halilovic that couldn’t find a team-mate. Just before half-time, in the 41st minute, a poor clearance by Ximo Navarro was pounced upon by Stuani, who turned to score his side’s ultimately winning goal, making it 1-2 for Girona.
In the second half, David García took over in place of Ximo Navarro at the centre of defence. The yellows’ captain turned out for yet another appearance for his team, fast approaching the record for official matches played for Las Palmas, currently held by historic player Germán Dévora. Las Palmas could have equalised with long range efforts by Halilovic and Erik Expósito, the second of which went into the side netting. Girona were now holding back, and limited themselves to playing out the match, to round off a great year in this their first ever season in the top flight of Spanish football.
