Las Palmas wins its first Copa clash with a resounding scoreline (0-7)
Las Palmas secured their place in the next round of the Copa del Rey with a resounding 7-0 victory over Ontiñena CF in Monzón. Jaime Mata stole the show with four goals, while Marc Cardona, Juanma Herzog, and Manu Fuster each contributed to complete the rout.
The match had an unexpected start, as Las Palmas took the lead with just 10 players on the pitch. Midfielder Enzo Loiodice left the field with a knee injury in the 18th minute, and while Javi Muñoz quickly warmed up as a substitute, Jaime Mata dribbled past the keeper to open the scoring with a cool finish.
Although Ontiñena played with enthusiasm, buoyed by their home crowd, Las Palmas stayed composed, controlling possession and patiently waiting for gaps to appear in Ontiñena’s defense. Before halftime, they came close to adding a second, with Mata firing over the crossbar and Sandro having a one-on-one chance denied by goalkeeper Hernán Presa.
Ontiñena had their moment just before the break when they were awarded a penalty after an accidental handball by Benito. Damián Llobet stepped up, but Las Palmas keeper Dinko Horkas guessed correctly to keep it out.
In the second half, Las Palmas broke the game wide open. Mata scored again in the 67th minute, sparking a flood of goals. Cardona added another, Herzog scored off a corner, Mata completed his hat-trick and added a fourth, and Fuster wrapped it up at 7-0.
