Las Palmas Deserves More Against Champions League-bound Real Sociedad (0-0)
The first victory of the 2023-24 season slipped through UD Las Palmas' fingers once again. Xavi García Pimienta's team secured a goalless draw (0-0) against Real Sociedad, a Champions League-caliber opponent that provided a demanding test for the yellow team, supported by 25,335 fans in the stands.
García Pimienta's players deserved a win, although the overall performance in the match is a morale boost for the Gran Canaria team, reinforcing many aspects of the current style displayed in the first two matches of the competition against Real Mallorca and Valencia.
The best opportunities of the afternoon were for the Canarian side, with several commendable saves from goalkeeper Remiro and two shots hitting the crossbar. However, luck wasn't on their side, and that long-awaited victory remains elusive.
The coach of UD Las Palmas opted for several changes in the starting eleven this time, including the debut of Guinean forward Sory Kaba. Alongside the new striker, Mexican Julián Araujo also made his first appearance in the starting lineup, having previously played minutes in the Mestalla match.
Las Palmas came out determined and probed for a goal from the early minutes, with a pass from Jonathan Viera and a left-footed shot by Sandro. The ball went over Remiro's goal, generating initial unease for the Basque team. And that wouldn't be the only instance.
The game displayed an offensive flavor from these initial actions, with UD Las Palmas showing greater directness compared to the previous matches. If Sandro's shot quickened the fans' heartbeats in the 3rd minute, Enzo Loiodice did the same in the 15th. The Frenchman tried from outside the box, but his effort was touched by Remiro's fingers before hitting the crossbar.
Las Palmas had managed to get deeply involved in a match where they entered the opponent's box more often than their rival, orchestrating the play through possession. In reality, the visitors managed only one shot on target in the first half, a solo attempt by Take that missed Valles' goal.
Everything else in those first 45 minutes, arguably the best of the season so far, belonged to the island team. Twice more before the half-hour mark, the goal threatened the Txuriurdin net. First, after a corner deflected off Munir's thigh. However, the ball from the Spanish-Moroccan went over the crossbar. Two minutes later, it was Sandro Ramírez once again, hooking a shot aiming for the base of the post. Yet again, Remiro's glove intervened, showing good reflexes and speed in his response as the goalkeeper.
The Gran Canaria side entered the locker room motivated by having controlled the narrative of the match, yet frustrated for not converting some of their excellent first-half chances.
In the second half, the game opened up, with a more balanced dominance. Nevertheless, Las Palmas enjoyed their best opportunities in the final stretch, with another shot from Loiodice hitting the crossbar and a response from Remiro to a low and powerful shot from Benito.
Real Sociedad also came closer and made Valles work, who from his position further solidified the notable defensive effort displayed in this third match of the campaign.
