Paco Herrera takes over from Manolo Jiménez after his sacking
UD Las Palmas president Miguel Ángel Ramírez confirmed on UDRADIO that Paco Herrera is the team’s new manager, replacing Manolo Jiménez, who was sacked last night following the 2-2 draw against Granada. He will be accompanied on the bench by Ángel Rodrígu
Paco Herrera was manager at the club the last time they were promoted to the first division in the 2014/2015 season, and is highly regarded by the yellows fans. He will take over for the rest of the season, with the option of a further year if the side are promoted. He arrives in Gran Canaria tomorrow afternoon from Barcelona at 18.40. He will be unveiled on Monday at 12.00 in the press room at the Estadio Gran Canaria.
He returns to the bench nearly four years after he left it. He was sacked on 8th October 2015 following Las Palmas’ defeat against Getafe (4-0). Up to that point he had only managed one victory (2-0 against Sevilla) and had drawn against Levante and Celta. The rest of the games resulted in defeat: (Atlético Madrid, Rayo Vallecano, Eibar, and FC Barcelona ).
After leaving the club last time around, Paco Herrera managed Real Valladolid and Sporting de Gijón. He nearly achieved promotion play offs at Valladolid, finishing in joint 7th place on the same points as Huesca, while at Gijón he was relieved of his post in the 18th game of the season. He recently rescinded his contract with Greek outfit Aris de Salónica after just ten matches, leaving side in seventh place in the league.
He had previously gained promotion to the first division with Celta de Vigo. Also in previous seasons he has been manager at Real Zaragoza, Badajoz, Numancia, Mérida, Albacete Balompié, Poli Ejido, Recreativo de Huelva, Castellón, and Villarreal B.
